I promised a friend of mine from NYC who’s a major UrbanSpoon believer that I’d blog for L’Aube since we both love it (and both grew up in France) and I live here in Philly! So I am being cheap and took a bunch of reviews of L’Aube from all the local papers (all are excellent) and am pasting them. But you can see them all at cafelaube.com. I definitely recommend this place. It’s not a chain cafe, it’s authentically French food, crepes, sandwiches, and the best French pastries and best bagels and coffee drinks. For an out-of-the-way little cafe its quality has garnered it a lot of attention in all the papers as if it were a sit-dwn restaurant and it has held its own, but so far they’ve kept to their low-key focus on being a genuine no-frills French cafe. It’s a family-owned place, too!

My first meal at cafe l’aube was extraordinary! The ambiance was very cool and laid back, music playing was smooth and jazzy with a French twist. . Croque Monsieur is my favorite of all. Then the fig crepe, then the french sandwich with crispy french bread, hot melting brie, crunchy walnuts, and sweet honey. Mmmm. I’m getting hungry already. Did I forget to mention the Belgium waffle? I saw my favorite selection on another restaurant’s menu and had to have it because of my experience w. cafe l’aube. It was not the same though. You’ve gotta go here at least just to say you went. But open your noses and smell the freshly ground coffee and the sweet smell of fig or honey when you cross the threshhold. You’re treated like royalty when ur there and the staff treats you as if you were a special guest in their own homes. I love it and am looking forward to regular visits. I’ve already told everyone I know! Bon Appetit!

Every drink and dish is carefully crafted and the lack of haste accounts for the exquisite quality on your plate. It has the funky feel of Grad Hospital/South St but is usually a bit quieter. And… they bought some new tables and chairs to replace their old metal ones – bonus!
